Pandora's Box · 1999

Can you still play Pandora's Box?

Yes, if you still have the CD and an older version of Windows, or a virtual machine running one. On a modern PC the disc usually won't start. Here's why, and what you can do.

Will it run on Windows 10 or Windows 11?

Usually not. The CD versions of Pandora's Box use SafeDisc, a copy-protection system that relied on a Windows driver. Microsoft removed support for that driver from Windows 10 in 2015 for security reasons, and Windows 11 doesn't have it either. The installer may run, but the game won't start.

What does work?

  • An old PC. A computer with Windows 98, ME or XP and a CD drive runs it as it was meant to be run.
  • A virtual machine. Windows XP in a virtual machine (VirtualBox, VMware and the like), with your disc in the drive or an image of it, is the easiest way on a modern PC.
  • Linux. Some people run it under Wine. Lutris has a community entry for the game. Results vary with the edition you own.

Can I buy it on Steam, GOG or the Microsoft Store?

Not as far as we know. Microsoft has never re-released it, so second-hand CDs are the only legal copies. Look for the original 1999 release or the Puzzle Game of the Year Edition, which adds 50 puzzles.

Is it abandonware? Can I download it?

Old doesn't mean free. The game is still Microsoft's copyright, even though it's no longer sold, so we don't link to downloads. If you have your own disc, making an image of it for a virtual machine is the tidy way to keep it playing.

Is there a Mac, iPhone or Android version?

Microsoft never made one. That's partly why we made Pandora's Puzzle Box, a new puzzle game inspired by it.
