The seven tricksters

Each level of Pandora's Box hunts down one trickster from the world's folklore. Between puzzles, the game told that trickster's most famous tale, one box piece at a time.

Level 1

Maui

The demigod of Polynesian legend, who fished islands up out of the sea with his magic hook. His face of the box shows a canoe, a fish, a seagull and a hook around his portrait.

Cities: New York, Cairo, Madrid, Paris, Honolulu. Challenge: a giant Overlap of tropical fish.

Level 2

Puck

The mischievous sprite of English folklore, and of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. The level retells the play's mischief: Oberon's magic flower, the sleeping Queen Titania, and Bottom, the actor whose head Puck turns into a donkey's.

Cities: Lusaka, Rio de Janeiro, Philadelphia, St Petersburg, London. Challenge: Focus Point. New puzzle type: Jesse's Strips.

Level 3

Eris

The Greek goddess of strife. Left off the gods' guest list, she took revenge with a gift: a golden apple that set Hera, Athena and Aphrodite quarrelling over which of them was the fairest.

Cities: Machu Picchu, Istanbul, Paris, Kyoto, Athens. Challenge: Slices, rebuilding the golden apple.

Level 4

Coyote

The trickster of the North American Southwest, who never came by anything honestly if he could help it. His tale: a sack of "magic songs", a flock of geese who wanted to dance, and the one goose clever enough to open her eyes.

Cities: Sydney, Delhi, Florence, Moscow, Santa Fe. Challenge: Find and Fill, full of foxes, jackals and coyotes. New puzzle type: Lens Bender.

Level 5

Monkey

Born from a magic rock, he leapt through a waterfall to become king of the monkeys. Then he went down to the underworld and crossed every monkey's name off the List of the Dead.

Cities: Tahiti, Jerusalem, Milan, Berlin, Shanghai. Challenge: two stages, Overlap then Focus Point.

Level 6

Anansi

The spider of West African folktales, who loved to eat and hated to share. His story pits him against Turtle, a dinner of sweet potatoes, and a meal at the bottom of a pond, where Anansi's own trick catches him out.

Cities: Tokyo, Amsterdam, Dublin, San Francisco, Nairobi. Challenge: two stages, Overlap then Rotascope. New puzzle type: Interlock.

Level 7

Raven

The trickster of the Pacific Northwest, who sometimes played tricks for good. The first people lived in darkness while the Sky Chief kept the sun in a box. Raven turned himself into a pine needle, was born as the chief's grandson, and cried until he was given the box.

Cities: Rome, Mexico City, Bangkok, Vienna, Vancouver. Challenge: three stages, Jesse's Strips, then Rotascope, then Focus Point.

Each level fills one face of the box: four pieces from the story, then the trickster's own portrait as the fifth. Find all five, and the trickster's challenge opens.
